Choosing the right pallet size is one of the most important decisions in logistics planning. The wrong size can lead to wasted space, damaged products, shipping surcharges, and compatibility issues with racking and handling equipment.

The most common pallet size in North America is the GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet at 48" × 40". This size accounts for approximately 30% of all pallets produced and is the standard for grocery, retail, and general manufacturing. If you're unsure which size to choose, the 48×40 is almost always a safe bet.

For international trade, the EUR/EPAL pallet (47.24" × 31.50" / 1200 × 800 mm) is the European standard. If you're shipping to or from Europe, this size is often required. EPAL-stamped pallets are regulated and tracked throughout their lifecycle.

The ISO has identified six standard pallet sizes that cover most global logistics needs: 1200×1000mm, 1200×800mm, 1219×1016mm (GMA), 1140×1140mm, 1067×1067mm, and 1165×1165mm. These sizes are designed to optimize container loading and warehouse space.

Beyond standard sizes, custom pallets are available for specialized applications. Oversized pallets for machinery, miniature pallets for retail display, and odd-shaped pallets for unique products can all be manufactured to exact specifications.

When selecting a pallet size, consider these factors: your product dimensions, shipping container compatibility, racking system specifications, forklift type, and industry standards. It's also important to consider whether your pallets will be used domestically or internationally.

Load capacity varies significantly by pallet size and construction. A standard GMA stringer pallet supports approximately 2,500 lbs dynamically, while a block pallet of the same size can handle up to 5,500 lbs. Always verify that your chosen pallet can handle your load requirements.
