Common Pallet Mistakes to Avoid
Learn from the most frequent errors we see customers make, and save yourself time and money.
Using untreated pallets for international shipping
Shipments are rejected at customs, quarantined, or destroyed. You face delays, re-shipping costs, and potential fines from border protection agencies.
Always use ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets with the IPPC stamp for any shipment crossing international borders. Verify the stamp is visible and legible before loading.
Overloading pallets beyond their rated capacity
Pallet failure during transport or storage can cause product damage, worker injuries, insurance claims, and OSHA violations.
Know the static, dynamic, and racking load ratings for your pallets. Always account for the total weight including packaging. When in doubt, upgrade to a heavier-duty pallet.
Stacking pallets too high without securing the load
Unstable stacks can topple, damaging products and creating dangerous conditions for warehouse workers. This is one of the leading causes of warehouse injuries.
Follow your pallet manufacturer's stacking recommendations. Use stretch wrap, banding, or corner boards to secure loads. Never exceed your racking system's rated capacity.
Using the wrong pallet size for your racking system
Pallets that are too small can fall through racking beams. Pallets that are too large will not fit or will overhang dangerously. Both scenarios create safety hazards and inefficiency.
Measure your racking beam spacing and depth before ordering pallets. Standard selective racking is designed for 48x40 GMA pallets. Non-standard racking requires custom pallet sizes.
Throwing away damaged pallets instead of recycling
You lose money (damaged pallets still have value), fill up landfill space, and in California, you may violate SB 1383 organic waste diversion requirements.
Partner with a pallet recycler like Riverside Pallet Co. We buy damaged pallets of all conditions and recycle 98% of all materials. Even scrap pallets have value.
Not inspecting pallets before loading
A pallet with a cracked stringer, loose board, or protruding nail can fail during shipping, damage products, or injure workers during handling.
Implement a quick visual inspection before every use: check for broken boards, cracked stringers, protruding nails, and excessive moisture or mold. Reject any pallet that fails inspection.
Pallet Weight Reference

Pallet Lifespan & Maintenance Tips
Maximize the useful life of your pallets with these practical care and handling tips.
Proper Storage
Store pallets in a dry, covered area to prevent moisture absorption, mold growth, and premature decay. Stack pallets no more than 15 high on a level surface. Avoid storing pallets directly on dirt or grass, which accelerates rot. Indoor storage can extend pallet life by 2-3 years compared to outdoor exposure.
Correct Forklift Handling
Train forklift operators to enter pallets squarely and fully — partial fork engagement is the number one cause of pallet damage. Forks should be spread to the widest stable position and fully inserted to the stringer or block. Avoid dragging pallets across the floor, as this destroys bottom deck boards and stringers.
Load Distribution
Distribute weight evenly across the pallet deck to prevent point loading, which can crack deck boards. Use edge boards, corner posts, and slip sheets to distribute concentrated loads. Never place heavy items on one corner or edge of the pallet. Uniform load distribution maximizes pallet life and load stability.
Regular Inspection
Inspect pallets before each use for cracked or broken boards, split stringers, protruding nails, and signs of moisture damage or mold. A quick 10-second visual check prevents product damage, worker injuries, and costly pallet failures during transit. Remove damaged pallets from service immediately.
Timely Repair
Do not continue using pallets with broken boards or cracked stringers. A single broken deck board can cause an entire load to shift or collapse. Repair or replace damaged pallets promptly. Minor repairs (board replacement, nail re-seating) can restore a pallet to full service at a fraction of the cost of a new unit.
Avoid Chemical Exposure
Keep pallets away from harsh chemicals, solvents, and acids that can weaken wood fibers. If a chemical spill occurs on a pallet, remove it from service and dispose of it through proper channels — contaminated pallets should not be recycled for food or consumer product applications.
