How We Work With Manufacturers

A collaborative engineering approach from concept to ongoing supply

01

Production Line Audit

Our engineering team tours your production facility to evaluate conveyor systems, automated handling equipment, product dimensions, and weight profiles. We document every touchpoint where pallets interact with your process.

02

Load Engineering & Spec Design

We engineer pallet specifications based on your exact load requirements -- dynamic loads for forklift handling, static loads for racking, and racking loads for beam or drive-in systems. We calculate board thickness, stringer dimensions, and fastener patterns.

03

Prototype & Testing

Before committing to full production, we build prototype pallets and deliver them for real-world testing on your lines. We refine specs based on feedback from your operators and material handling equipment performance data.

04

Production Run & Quality Control

Once specs are approved, we produce your pallets with strict quality controls. Every batch is dimensionally checked, load-tested to spec, and visually inspected. We maintain your spec on file for consistent reorders.

Case Study

Inland Empire Metal Fabricators

How a precision metal fabrication plant eliminated pallet-related production downtime

The Challenge

Inland Empire Metal Fabricators (IEMF) produces precision-machined components for aerospace and defense contractors at their 180,000 square foot facility in Fontana, CA. Their finished products range from 50 to 2,200 pounds per unit, requiring pallets with exceptional load capacity and dimensional consistency.

IEMF was experiencing an average of 3.2 pallet failures per week on their automated conveyor system, each incident causing 45-90 minutes of production line downtime. Their existing supplier delivered pallets with inconsistent stringer heights that jammed their roller conveyors and caused product instability during automated wrapping.

The cost of these failures -- including downtime, damaged products, and rework -- averaged $28,000 per month.

The Solution

Our engineering team spent two days on IEMF's production floor, measuring conveyor clearances, documenting AGV path requirements, and cataloging every product weight class. We designed three pallet specifications: a standard-duty pallet for components under 500 lbs, a heavy-duty reinforced pallet for 500-1,500 lb components, and an extra-heavy pallet with hardwood stringers and doubled deck boards for items over 1,500 lbs.

Each specification was built to a tolerance of plus or minus 1/4 inch on all dimensions, with consistent stringer heights verified by jig during production. We deliver twice weekly on a just-in-time schedule, color-coded by load class for instant identification on the production floor.

Precision pallets on automated conveyor system at manufacturing facility
“In 22 years of manufacturing, Riverside Pallet is the first pallet supplier that actually understood our production environment. They did not just sell us pallets -- they engineered a solution. We have not had a single conveyor jam since we switched, and our operators can grab the right pallet for the right product every time without thinking. That kind of reliability is priceless on a production line.”

Manufacturing FAQ

Common questions from production and plant managers

What is the maximum load capacity you can engineer into a pallet?

Our standard heavy-duty pallets support up to 5,000 lbs dynamic load (when moved by forklift) and 15,000 lbs static load (when stationary in racking or on the floor). For extreme applications, we can engineer pallets using hardwood stringers, doubled deck boards, and steel reinforcement to achieve even higher capacities. We always recommend providing your exact load specifications so we can engineer the most cost-effective solution without over-building.

Can you build pallets that work with our automated conveyor and AGV systems?

Yes, this is one of our specialties. Automated material handling systems require pallets with tight dimensional tolerances, consistent weight, and specific stringer or block configurations. We build pallets to tolerances as tight as plus or minus 1/4 inch and can match any conveyor or AGV manufacturer specifications. We recommend sharing your equipment documentation so we can engineer pallets for optimal performance.

Do you offer heat-treated pallets for international shipping?

Yes. All of our heat-treated pallets are ISPM-15 certified and stamped for international phytosanitary compliance. This is required for any wood pallet crossing international borders. Heat treatment eliminates pests without chemical fumigation, making our pallets suitable for food, pharmaceutical, and sensitive product manufacturing. We maintain a large inventory of heat-treated pallets in standard sizes for quick turnaround.

How do you ensure dimensional consistency across large production runs?

We use jigs, fixtures, and automated nailing equipment to maintain consistent dimensions throughout every production run. Each pallet is checked against spec at multiple points during assembly. For automated system clients, we perform additional measurements on stringer height, overall dimensions, and deck board spacing using calibrated tools. Every batch includes a quality control report documenting compliance.

What wood species do you use, and does it matter for our application?

We primarily use Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) and mixed hardwoods. SYP is our standard material, offering excellent strength-to-weight ratio at a competitive price. For heavy-duty applications exceeding 3,000 lbs dynamic load, we use oak or other hardwood stringers for superior load-bearing capacity. For food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, we can provide pallets made exclusively from kiln-dried or heat-treated wood to meet hygiene requirements.

Can you handle urgent or emergency pallet orders for production lines?

Yes. We maintain buffer inventory for manufacturing clients specifically for emergency situations. Standard GMA pallets can typically be delivered within 24 hours. Custom-spec pallets for urgent needs can be produced in 48-72 hours depending on complexity. We recommend establishing a safety stock level with your account manager to minimize the need for emergency orders.

Do you offer pallet repair services for our existing pallet inventory?

Absolutely. Many manufacturers accumulate pallets that are structurally sound but have one or two damaged boards. Our repair program collects these pallets, replaces broken or split boards, re-nails loose components, and returns them to service at a fraction of the cost of new pallets. This extends pallet life by 2-3 cycles on average and significantly reduces waste.
