International shipping adds layers of complexity to pallet selection. Here's your checklist for getting it right.

Shipping internationally? Your pallet choice can mean the difference between smooth customs clearance and costly delays, quarantine, or even destroyed shipments. Here's what you need to consider.

ISPM-15 compliance is non-negotiable. Any wooden pallet or crate used in international trade must be heat-treated and stamped with the IPPC mark. Using non-compliant pallets can result in your shipment being refused, quarantined, fumigated at your expense, or destroyed. Don't take chances.

Size matters for container optimization. International shipping primarily uses 20-foot and 40-foot containers. The EUR pallet (1200×800mm) was specifically designed to optimize 20-foot container loading. Two EUR pallets fit perfectly across the container width. For 40-foot containers, GMA pallets (48×40") are often preferred.

Destination country regulations vary. While ISPM-15 is the global standard, some countries have additional requirements. Australia requires specific documentation. Some Middle Eastern countries require fumigation certificates. China has recently increased inspection rates. Always check your destination country's specific requirements.

Material choice affects customs treatment. Plastic pallets are exempt from ISPM-15 requirements because they don't harbor pests. For companies shipping frequently to countries with strict enforcement, plastic pallets can eliminate compliance headaches entirely.

Weight considerations are especially important for air freight and LCL (less than container load) ocean shipments, where costs are calculated by weight. Lighter pallets mean more weight allocation for actual product. A heavy hardwood pallet can cost $50-100 in unnecessary shipping charges on international routes.

Documentation is critical. International shipments should include: ISPM-15 treatment certificates, packing list with pallet specifications, phytosanitary certificates (if required by destination), and commercial invoices that accurately describe the wood packaging materials.

We supply ISPM-15 compliant pallets in all standard international sizes. Our team can advise on destination-specific requirements and help you choose the most cost-effective pallet option for your international shipping needs.
