Warehouse automation is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. The global warehouse automation market is projected to reach $30 billion by 2026, with adoption rates climbing across every logistics sector. This revolution is quietly transforming pallet requirements.

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) are among the most demanding pallet users. These systems position pallets with millimeter precision in high-density racking that can reach 100 feet tall. A pallet that's even slightly out of spec — warped, oversized, or missing a board — can cause a system jam that shuts down the entire operation.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) interact with pallets differently than human-operated forklifts. They approach at consistent speeds, engage at precise positions, and cannot adapt to pallet defects the way a human operator can. Pallet consistency is therefore critical.

Robotic palletizers build pallet loads with precision that exceeds human capability. They can stack cases in optimized patterns that maximize space utilization and load stability. But they require pallets with flat, consistent deck surfaces — a warped board throws off the entire pattern.

What this means for pallet specifications: automated facilities need tighter dimensional tolerances (±1/8" versus ±1/4" for manual operations), consistent deck board spacing, flat and unwrapped surfaces, and uniform stiffness across the pallet. Not every pallet can meet these standards.

The implication for recycled pallets: automation compatibility requires more selective grading and inspection. Not all recycled pallets qualify for automated systems, but many do — particularly Grade A pallets from well-managed recycling operations with calibrated inspection processes.

At Riverside Pallet Co., we offer an automation-compatible grade of recycled pallets with tightened dimensional tolerances and enhanced inspection for surface flatness. For our automated warehouse clients, these pallets perform identically to new ones at 40% lower cost.
