Trend #1: Smart pallets and IoT tracking. GPS-enabled and RFID-tagged pallets are becoming more practical and affordable. Companies can now track pallet location, condition, temperature, and shock exposure in real time. While still primarily used for high-value applications, the cost curve is dropping fast.
Trend #2: Circular economy integration. More companies are adopting closed-loop pallet programs where pallets are tracked from supplier through the supply chain and back to the recycler. This model maximizes pallet lifecycle, reduces waste, and provides complete supply chain visibility.
Trend #3: Alternative materials. While wood still dominates, materials like pressed wood (used in IKEA's OGRA pallet), molded fiber, corrugated board, and recycled composite plastics are gaining ground in niche applications. These materials offer advantages in weight, hygiene, and consistency.
Trend #4: Automation compatibility. As warehouses automate with AS/RS systems, AGVs, and robotic palletizers, pallet dimensional consistency becomes critical. Tight tolerances that human-operated facilities could tolerate cause jams and errors in automated systems. This is driving demand for precision-manufactured pallets.
Trend #5: Sustainability reporting and ESG. Investors and regulators are demanding better environmental data, and pallet recycling is a tangible, measurable sustainability initiative. Companies are seeking pallet partners who can provide documented environmental impact data for ESG reports.
