Proper pallet maintenance can dramatically extend their useful life, saving your business money and reducing waste. Here are 10 practical tips that any warehouse or logistics operation can implement immediately.
Tip 1: Store pallets off the ground. Contact with wet or dirty surfaces accelerates rot and contamination. Use pallet racks or raised platforms for storage. Tip 2: Keep pallets dry. Moisture is wood's worst enemy. Store pallets in covered areas and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
Tip 3: Don't overload pallets. Every pallet has a rated load capacity. Exceeding it causes structural damage that may not be immediately visible but will lead to premature failure. Tip 4: Train forklift operators. A significant portion of pallet damage comes from improper forklift handling.
Tip 5: Inspect pallets before use. A quick visual check takes seconds and can prevent product damage, workplace injuries, and equipment problems. Look for broken boards, protruding nails, and structural cracks.
Tip 6: Rotate your pallet stock. Use a first-in, first-out approach to prevent pallets from sitting too long and deteriorating. Tip 7: Repair small damage promptly. A small crack today becomes a broken board tomorrow.
Tip 8: Stack pallets properly. Never stack empty pallets more than 15 high, and ensure stacks are straight and stable. Tip 9: Match pallets to loads. Using an oversized pallet for a small load is wasteful, and using an undersized pallet is dangerous.
Tip 10: Recycle don't discard. When pallets reach the end of their useful life in your facility, don't throw them away. Contact us for our buyback program — we'll pay you for pallets you no longer need and give them a second life.
