Stretch wrapping is the most common method of securing loads to pallets, but it's only effective when done correctly. Improper wrapping is a leading cause of load shifting, product damage, and even safety incidents during transportation.
The most important principle: anchor the wrap to the pallet itself. The first 2-3 wraps should go below the top deck level of the pallet, gripping the stringer or block. This locks the load to the pallet rather than just wrapping the product. Without this anchor, the entire load can slide off the pallet during braking or turning.
Apply consistent tension throughout the wrap. Too loose and the load shifts. Too tight and you can crush product or buckle the pallet. Most stretch wrap machines have adjustable tension settings — experiment to find the sweet spot for your specific product and pallet combination.
Overlap each wrap by 50%. This creates a continuous film with no weak points. Some operators try to save film by using wider spacing, but this creates gaps where the load can bulge and shift.
Top wrapping is often neglected but essential. After wrapping the sides, apply 2-3 layers across the top of the load. This prevents the top layer of product from shifting independently of the lower layers.
For heavy or irregularly shaped loads, consider combining stretch wrap with banding or corner protectors for additional security. The investment in proper load securement is always cheaper than a single damage claim.
