Cold chain logistics — the transportation and storage of temperature-sensitive products — presents unique challenges for pallet selection. From frozen foods to pharmaceuticals, the pallets you choose can directly impact product safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.

Temperature extremes affect pallet performance significantly. In freezer environments (-20°F to 0°F), wood pallets become more brittle and prone to cracking on impact. Moisture in the wood can freeze and expand, weakening structural joints. Plastic pallets, by contrast, maintain their structural properties across a wider temperature range.

Hygiene is paramount in cold chain. FDA regulations require that materials in contact with food products meet specific sanitary standards. While heat-treated wood pallets are acceptable, plastic pallets are generally preferred for their non-porous surfaces, resistance to bacterial growth, and ease of cleaning.

Condensation is a common challenge in cold chain operations. When pallets move from cold storage to ambient temperature, moisture condenses on their surfaces. Wood pallets absorb this moisture, which can promote mold growth and contaminate products. Plastic and composite pallets are impervious to moisture.

Weight considerations matter more in cold chain. Refrigerated trailers have lower weight limits than standard trailers due to the weight of insulation and cooling equipment. Lighter pallets (particularly plastic or lightweight wood) maximize the payload capacity available for actual product.

For pharmaceutical cold chain, the requirements are even more stringent. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) compliance often mandates plastic or stainless steel pallets, complete documentation of pallet sanitization, and traceability throughout the supply chain.

Our recommendation for cold chain applications: plastic pallets for freezer storage, pharmaceutical, and high-hygiene environments. Heat-treated Grade A wood pallets for general refrigerated transport where cost is a consideration. Custom solutions for unique cold chain applications.

Contact our team to discuss your cold chain pallet needs. We supply both plastic and wood pallets specifically selected and treated for temperature-controlled environments.
